ISU training visit to Guangzhou, China : March 2011

The ISU joined forces with the Public Health Evidence Based Medicine Research team to deliver a short training programme in Evidence Based Medicine and Academic English with doctors and researchers in the Women’s and Children’s hospital in Guangzhou, South China (pictured above) – an impressive new hospital opened in 2009.

This pilot project was one of several links between Guangzhou and the University of Birmingham and was enthusiastically received by the 32 participants on this first course.  The aim of the course was to aid participants in developing their research expertise in study design, effective critical reading and appropriate academic writing in English. Professor John Skelton and Ms Jan Whetstone represented the ISU in the training team (pictured below):

Jackie Beavan has a new role as Research Fellow for the West Midlands HIEC Simulation Theme.  HIEC stands for Health Innovation and Education Clusters – these are collaborative partnerships between NHS organisations, academia and industry there are several clusters nationwide.  Jackie hopes to look at, amongst other things, how the teaching of communication can be done alongside the teaching of clinical procedures.
